Your Google Business Profile Is Doing More Work Than Your Website. Are You Using It Right?
If someone in your area searches for what you do right now, your Google Business Profile (GBP) is probably the first thing they see. Before your website, before your social media, before anything else.
That little panel on the right side of Google with your hours, photos, reviews, and phone number? That’s your GBP. And for local service businesses like plumbers, contractors, salons, med spas, cleaning companies, and landscapers, it’s one of the most powerful marketing tools you have. The problem is most businesses set it up once and never touch it again.
Here’s what you’re missing.
1. An Incomplete Profile Is Costing You Calls
Google rewards complete profiles. The more information you fill in, the higher you show up in local search results, and the more confident potential customers feel clicking on you instead of a competitor.
At a minimum, your profile should have:
- Your exact business name, address, and phone number (matching what’s on your website)
- Your service area or service radius set correctly
- Updated business hours, including holiday hours
- A thorough business description (use this space to mention your services, your area, and what makes you different)
- Your primary and secondary business categories selected accurately
If any of those are missing or outdated, fix them today. It takes about 10 minutes and it directly affects whether people find you.
2. Photos Make or Break the First Impression
Businesses with photos get significantly more direction requests and website clicks than those without. And we’re talking real photos, not stock images.
For a local service business, that means:
- Photos of your team at work
- Before and after shots of completed projects
- Your storefront, vehicle wrap, or job site setup
- You or your team (people like knowing who’s showing up at their house)
Try to update your photos regularly. Google favors active profiles, and fresh photos signal that your business is open and engaged. A profile with photos from 2019 looks like a business that’s barely hanging on.
3. Reviews Are Your #1 Sales Tool, and Most Businesses Never Ask for Them
Reviews are the first thing people look at. Not your website, not your pricing, not your Instagram. Reviews.
The businesses dominating local search aren’t necessarily the best in town. They’re the ones with the most reviews. And most of them got there by doing one simple thing: asking every happy customer to leave one.
Here’s a simple workflow that actually works:
- Text or email your customer a direct link to your Google review page right after the job is done
- Train your team to mention it in person (“If you’re happy with the work, we’d really appreciate a Google review. It helps us a lot!”)
- Respond to every review, positive or negative. It shows Google and future customers that you’re paying attention
If you have less than 20 reviews, making that your top priority this month is one of the best things you can do for your business.
4. Google Posts Are Free Advertising That Almost Nobody Uses
Inside your GBP dashboard, you can publish Google Posts. Think of them like mini social media updates that show up directly in your search listing. Promotions, seasonal offers, new services, project highlights, whatever you want to put in front of people who are already searching for you.
Most local businesses have no idea this feature exists. That’s your advantage right there.
Even posting once a month makes a difference. A post about a seasonal special or a recent project is enough to make your profile look active and give someone a reason to pick you over a competitor with a listing that looks like it hasn’t been touched in years.
5. The Q&A Section Is a Sneaky SEO Win
Your GBP has a Questions & Answers section where anyone can ask a question about your business, and anyone can answer it. Yes, that includes you.
Don’t wait around for customers to fill this in. Go in and seed it with your most common questions:
- “Do you offer free estimates?”
- “What areas do you serve?”
- “Are you licensed and insured?”
- “What’s your typical turnaround time?”
These answers show up in your listing and help people make faster decisions. They also add relevant content to your profile, which gives Google more to work with when deciding where to rank you.
The Bottom Line
Your Google Business Profile is free, it’s visible, and it’s often the very first impression someone gets of your business. Most of your competitors are sleeping on it, which means a little consistency here goes a long way.
